Motorway middle-lane hoggers to face on-the-spot fines

Tailgating and middle-lane hogging will now incur fixed penalties  Motorway tailgaters and middle-lane hoggers are to face quick justice with on-the-spot fixed penalties under new measures announced by the government. From July, police will be able to issue £100 fines and three points for careless driving offences that currently have to go to court. The idea is to free up the police from spending time on court cases. Current fixed penalties for using a phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt will also rise by £40 to £100. The move brings careless driving offences into line with the penalties for similar non-motoring fixed penalties. Drivers will still be able to appeal against any decision through the courts. Driving examiner strike: candidates urged to attend tests

Driving test candidates with tests on Friday 31 May should still come for their test despite the threat of strike action by examiners. Driving examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Service union are planning to take strike action on Friday 31 May 2013. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is doing everything it can to make sure that tests go ahead as planned and urges all candidates to come for their test as usual. You won’t have to contact DSA to rebook if you can’t take your test because of the strike action. You should hear from the agency with a new date within 5 to 10 working days. DSA Chief Executive Rosemary Thew said: "I’m so sorry that such an important day for you may be disrupted due to strike action. We’re doing our best to minimise any inconvenience. "We’re asking you to come for your test as normal as there’s still a chance it will go ahead.
